Weeds of Container Nurseries in the United States

Asiatic or oriental hawksbeard (Youngia japonica)
Family: Asteraceae
Hawksbeard is a summer annual herb, often persisting year round in nurseries.  Seedlings form a rosette resembling a small sowthistle but leaves are hairy.  Inflorescence stalk is leafless, branched at the top and 6 to 15 inches tall.  Flowers are yellow, dandelion-like but only about 1/2 inch in diameter.  Seedheads are dandelion-like, about 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter, and seeds are wind dispersed.   Do not let plants go to seed in the nursery. No specific data are available on herbicide susceptibility but it appears to be well controlled by available preemergence herbicides.
