Virginia Asian Soybean Rust
Collecting and Sending Samples for Diagnosis

If you suspect Asian soybean rust is present in a field:
  • Collect leaves that are representative of symptoms in the field. If possible, leave the stem attached to leaves to allow leaves to remain in fresh condition longer.
  • Double-bag leaves in sealable bags.
  • Package to avoid damage to delicate leaf tissue.
  • Include the completed Plant Disease Clinic Diagnostic Form,  which is available at local Virginia Cooperative Extension offices. Fill out the form completely.
  • Do not mail samples late in the week when they are likely to be held in the mail over the weekend. Mailing delicate soybean leaf tissue late in the week invariably  results in deteriorated samples and decreases the chance for a diagnosis.
  • If samples are collected near the end of the week, place in sealable bags and hold in the refrigerator until they can be mailed early in the week.
Samples may be taken to your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office or sent by overnight mail to one of the following Virginia diagnostic facilities:
