Weeds of Container Nurseries in the United States

Common Cottonweed (Populus deltoides)
Family: Salicaeae

A large, fast-growing tree reaching over 60 feet at maturity; weedy as seedlings and root sprouts.  Leaves are alternate, simple, 3 to 5 inches long, triangular, with serrated margins and flattened petioles.  Fruit is a capsule with seeds surrounded by cotton-like hairs that facilitate wind and water dispersal.

Control guidelines for tree and shrub seedlings:  These species are not well controlled by preemergence herbicides and selective postemergence controls are not available.  Hand pull seedlings when small.
